What is Rasta Pasta?
Rasta Pasta is a vibrant and flavorful fusion dish that combines culinary traditions of the Caribbean and Italy. The name “Rasta” is a nod to Rastafarian culture, which originated in Jamaica, and the dish itself is a celebration of bold spices, colorful ingredients, and creamy textures. At its core, Rasta Pasta typically features pasta tossed with jerk seasoning, an array of bell peppers, and a rich sauce made with either coconut milk or heavy cream.
Key Ingredients
- Pasta: Penne or fettuccine are popular choices, but any pasta can be used.
- Jerk Seasoning: This essential blend of spices includes allspice, thyme, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, garlic, and scotch bonnet peppers, providing the dish with its signature heat and aroma.
- Bell Peppers: A mix of red, yellow, and green bell peppers adds both color and sweetness.
- Cream or Coconut Milk: These ingredients create a luscious sauce, with coconut milk adding a tropical twist.
- Protein (Optional): Chicken, shrimp, or tofu, often marinated in jerk seasoning and grilled or sautéed, can be added for extra substance.
- Aromatics: Garlic and onions are typically sautéed to form the flavor base of the sauce.
- Cheese: Parmesan or a similar cheese is often included for added creaminess.
A Burst of Flavor: Creamy Jerk Bell Pepper Pasta
There’s nothing quite like the vibrant fusion of flavors that can transform a simple pasta dish into a culinary masterpiece. Today, I’m excited to share a recipe that brings together the warmth of jerk seasoning, the creaminess of a rich sauce, and the freshness of bell peppers. This Creamy Jerk Bell Pepper Pasta aka Rasta Pasta is not only a feast for the taste buds but also a delight to prepare. Let’s dive in!

Preparing the Ingredients
To start, gather your fresh ingredients: two bell peppers and three to four cloves of garlic. I find that slicing the bell peppers into thin strips not only makes them cook evenly but also adds a beautiful texture to the dish. As for the garlic, a good mince will release its aromatic essence, which will be the foundation of our flavorful sauce.

Cooking the Pasta
Next, it’s time to cook the pasta. Boil a large pot of water, and once it’s bubbling away, add in two generous pinches of salt. This step is crucial as it seasons the pasta from within, enhancing the overall flavor of the dish. Cook the pasta according to the package instructions until it reaches that perfect al dente texture. Remember, the pasta will finish cooking in the sauce later, so aim for a slightly firm bite.

Building the Sauce
While the pasta is boiling, heat two tablespoons of olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the minced garlic and sauté until it becomes fragrant—this should take about 30 seconds. Be careful not to burn the garlic, as it can turn bitter. Immediately after, toss in the sliced bell peppers. Cook them for a few minutes until they soften and their natural sweetness begins to emerge.
Adding the Jerk Seasoning and Cream
Now comes the magic: sprinkle in your desired amount of jerk seasoning. This is where you can customize the heat and flavor intensity to your liking. Stir the seasoning into the peppers and garlic, allowing it to coat them evenly. Then, pour in the cream, stirring continuously. Let the mixture simmer for a couple of minutes until the sauce thickens to a luxurious consistency.

Finishing Touches
For an extra layer of indulgence, consider adding some freshly grated Parmesan cheese and a handful of chopped green onions. The Parmesan adds a nutty depth to the sauce, while the green onions bring a subtle crunch and freshness. Stir these in gently, allowing the cheese to melt and the onions to blend into the sauce.
Bringing It All Together
Finally, add the cooked pasta to the pan, tossing it thoroughly so that each strand is coated with the creamy, spicy sauce. Let the pasta soak up the flavors for a minute or two, then it’s time to serve. This dish is best enjoyed hot, with perhaps a sprinkle of extra Parmesan on top and a few more green onions for garnish.
In just a few simple steps, you’ve created a dish that’s not only visually appealing but also bursting with flavor. The combination of creamy sauce, spicy jerk seasoning, and tender bell peppers is sure to make this Creamy Jerk Bell Pepper Pasta a new favorite in your recipe rotation. Enjoy!
